Reading aloud and bringing language enjoyment to a family with children (2-8 years) in a poor language environment.
The VoorleesExpress is a project where volunteers read to children at home every week. Do you have an affinity for children and are you enthusiastic about language and reading aloud? Are you interested in people from different backgrounds and do you speak fluent Dutch? Then sign up!

What does a reader do?
As a reader, you'll read aloud weekly to children growing up in a language-poor home environment. You'll visit the family's home twenty times, on a fixed afternoon at the same time. As a reader, you'll gradually introduce parents and children to interactive reading aloud and demonstrate how enjoyable reading can be. You can also bring the joy of language to the family in various ways, for example, by singing songs, playing games, or doing crafts together. Together with the family, you'll explore how language skills best fit their home environment and provide the parent(s) with tools to take over after 20 weeks. The VoorleesExpress is a unique and educational experience for both families and readers!
Objectives
The VoorleesExpress has several goals. We want to stimulate children's language development and enjoyment of reading. We introduce the reading ritual to families and give parents the tools to enrich the language environment at home. We also want to connect people from different socio-cultural backgrounds locally. But above all, participating in the VoorleesExpress is a lot of fun!
Good to know:
- The project starts four times a year: in February, May, September and November
- We will request a Certificate of Good Conduct for you free of charge
- You can count on guidance throughout the project
- You will also participate in the introductory course, interactive reading training, optional reader meetings and theme meetings
- Reading aloud, including library visits and evaluation, takes an average of 2 hours per week
