What is the National Youth Commission?

The National Youth Commission (NJC) of the Red Cross strengthens the youth network in the Netherlands and supports young volunteers. The NJC represents young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who work for the Red Cross at the state, district and local levels. The committee participates in the implementation of national policy and the Youth Strategy. Finally, the NJC maintains contact with the national and international network, organizes events and develops projects for young volunteers.

What are you going to do?

Within the Red Cross there are various opportunities for volunteers to develop and grow in position(s). As a Learning & Development Committee member of the National Youth Committee of the Dutch Red Cross, you actively participate in all career opportunities aimed at young volunteers within the Red Cross. In addition, you represent the voice of young people within the online training offer of the Red Cross Academy. Does this sound like something for you? Then this challenging function might be something for you!

  • You are aware of the current development offer and the career opportunities for young people within the Red Cross. You also know who young volunteers can turn to in their district for questions about personal development.
  • You put together a suitable training program within the trainee program of the 11 trainee youth directors. A trainee youth driver is part of a Red Cross district board. • You organize workshops with interesting speakers or facilitate workshops during the student desk weekend (twice a year).
  • You organize a national (digital) meeting for young volunteers twice a year that contributes to the development of their skills and is relevant to their contribution to the Dutch Red Cross. For example, in collaboration with the Communication & Events committee member and in coordination with the Red Cross Academy.
  • You represent the voice of young volunteers within the Red Cross Academy department of the Association Office by advising them on the needs of young people in the development of new learning routes and offerings.
  • You work together with your point of contact within the Red Cross association office of the Red Cross Academy department.

Who are you?

  • You are between 18 and 30 years old.
  • You have knowledge of or affinity with learning & development to organize training courses that meet the needs of young volunteers so that they can develop further.
  • You have good organizational skills to plan, coordinate and facilitate training and meetings.
  • You are creative and innovative to organize exciting training sessions and come up with ideas so that young volunteers can develop further.
  • You can communicate effectively with various stakeholders including young volunteers, speakers and districts to ensure training runs smoothly.
  • You have an affinity with young people and involving young people in the Red Cross.
  • You speak and write Dutch well and you are comfortable speaking and writing in English.
  • You are able to meet with the National Youth Committee at least twice a month (online or physically in Utrecht, travel expenses will be reimbursed).
  • You are available 6-8 hours a week in the period August 2023 to July 2024. The working hours can be arranged flexibly.

What does the Red Cross offer you as a member of the Learning & Development committee of the National Youth Commission?

  • The opportunity to build a large network in a short time and to make valuable contacts within and outside the organization.
  • Relevant learning & development work experience and the chance to strengthen your CV by gaining training skills and developing skills in teamwork, networking and organizing.
  • Guidance in drawing up and implementing your personal development plan, with which you can further develop your skills as a leader and as a person.
  • An influential position within the non-profit sector, in which you can influence the strategy and projects of the Dutch Red Cross through the Youth Committee and thus have a positive impact on society.
  • Knowledge about national and international (emergency) aid, international humanitarian law, crisis management and the seven basic principles of the Red Cross.
  • The possibility to follow a first aid course free of charge and to get your certificate.
