Summary
Sometimes people are (temporarily) vulnerable and as a result they can miss the social connection. Then a volunteer can help.Detailed description
As a volunteer you can be a true support for someone by listening and encouraging. With person-to-person contact (one-on-one at the participant's home or together during a walk or other activity) you can improve someone's quality of life.
The Humanitas Maatjes project is committed to breaking through loneliness and promoting the social and community participation of people who are particularly vulnerable . Think of people with early dementia, personal suffering, feeling of loneliness, depression, sensitivity to psychosis, intellectual disability, psychological disability, homelessness and addiction.
These people are sometimes misunderstood by their environment. Due to their (temporary) vulnerability, they may miss social connection. A volunteer can help with this.
At the Humanitas department Maastricht-Heuvelland we are looking for volunteers as:
Buddy for people who are (temporarily) extra vulnerable
The function:
The contact between the participant and the volunteer is the most important point of attention. The volunteer supports the participant by mainly listening and encouraging. The volunteer tries to improve the participant's quality of life through human-to-human contact (one-on-one at the participant's home or during an activity). The support is from an equal basis. Companionship and doing everyday things are central, but also practical support such as help with shopping or going to the GP/hospital together.
What do we ask:
as a volunteer…
- are you someone who loves people;
- Do you have a positive attitude and can you create a good atmosphere?
- do you have empathy and respect for the living situation of the participants;
- do you have initiative and do you take the first step in contact;
- do you stand firm and set your limits;
- are you reliable and keep your promises;
- Do you have a few hours once a week to interact with a participant as a buddy;
- you put the Humanitas values into practice (equality, self-direction, taking responsibility for yourself and others and demand-oriented).
What do you get in return
- Challenging and interesting work in your spare time.
- Member of a dynamic organization
- Mandatory and periodic training that applies to the target group.
- Individual guidance from a coordinator.
- Accident and third-party insurance
- Travel and expense allowance, no parking allowance
