Volunteer Alzheimer Center (M / F)

Introduction

The Alzheimer Center stands for distinctive patient care and high-quality scientific research. The Alzheimer Center strives for a leading position in care and research in the field of dementia, particularly where it concerns dementia at a young age. The mission is to make dementia negotiable and treatable and ultimately to cure. The so-called 'screening days' form the heart of patient care at the Alzheimer Center. During a screening day, a patient goes through all the tests needed for a diagnosis in one day.

Target

Patients from the Alzheimer Center spend a large part of the day in our center. They visit various departments so that the diagnostics can be determined in one day. They spend part of the day in the Alzheimer's lounge. Distraction, company, conviviality and extra attention that can be offered by a volunteer is welcome. This attention can make the stay of the patient visiting the center more pleasant.

Profile

The volunteer has mainly contact with the patient and his family. It is important to realize that it is an oncological target group and that these are often seriously ill people. The volunteer must be able to deal with this and realize that he / she is at the service of the patient. The volunteer offers the patient (and counselors) extra support in the form of a listening ear or by escorting to other places in the hospital. They also have an eye for the needs of patients in the waiting room, such as attention or the need to be alone, need for information or for example distraction. A service-oriented attitude among the volunteer is the guiding principle here.

Tasks

The hostess / lord can make an important contribution to the well-being of the patient during the screening day. The main tasks are receiving patients and guiding the patient to the various examinations during the day. In addition, the intention is for the hostess / lord to ensure that the patient feels as comfortable as possible. That includes: taking care of lunch, having a chat, drinking coffee / tea, reading the newspaper, playing games, handing out meals and keeping the lounge in order.

Working hours

Monday from 8 am to 2.30 pm, this is currently a function for 6 months. (Voluntary commitment on Tuesday is negotiable)

Contacts

With patients, family members or supervisor of the patient and nursing consultant, administrative staff, neurologist and other employees of the center.

Knowledge and Skills

For this department of VU University Medical Center we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with a down-to-earth approach, patience and life experience. Furthermore, they must have good physical condition, be representative, and have good communication skills and good command of the Dutch language.
