Do you want to contribute to inclusion in Uganda? Talking Hands is looking for a secretary, treasurer and/or general board member.

Contribute with your knowledge and commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities in Uganda.

Within the board of Talking Hands, positions are becoming available as some current board members will be stepping down. We are therefore looking for a secretary, treasurer and general board member. Depending on your experience and interests, you can take on one role or combine multiple roles.

About Talking Hands

Talking Hands is committed to the social inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing people in Uganda. Together with local partners, we work on improving access to education, employment opportunities, and awareness around sign language and equal rights.

The board

As a board member, you contribute to the organisation’s direction, policy, and continuity. Together with the other board members, you help guide the organisation, safeguard its mission and values, make decisions on financial matters, and oversee the implementation of projects in Uganda and the organisation’s activities. You are also closely connected to the day-to-day reality of the organisation. It is a role in which you not only take part in decision-making but also actively contribute to the development and impact of the foundation, together with a committed team.

The roles

Secretary

As secretary, you work together with other board members and volunteers on the internal and external communication of the foundation. You play an important role in increasing the visibility of Talking Hands and in ensuring clear and consistent communication about the organisation’s projects and activities. You coordinate the development and management of (online) communication channels, write texts, and maintain contact with external relations. You are also responsible for administrative support of the board, such as the careful recording of board decisions and meetings.

Treasurer

As treasurer, you are responsible for the financial administration of the foundation and help ensure a transparent and healthy financial structure. You maintain accurate bookkeeping, monitor that expenditures remain within the budget, and prepare the annual budget and financial report together with the board. You also maintain contact regarding project budgets with our local partners in Uganda, manage donations, and send acknowledgements of received contributions. In addition, you handle administrative processing of any taxes related to the sale of our products and ensure compliance with financial obligations under the ANBI status.

General board member

The exact focus of this role depends strongly on your background, experience, and interests. Depending on this, you may focus within the board on areas such as fundraising, acquisition of partnerships and funding, volunteer recruitment, or relationship building with partners. This gives you the opportunity to apply your strengths where they add the most value and help strengthen the organisation in a way that suits you. You also act as a sparring partner within the board and contribute to the continued growth and development of the organisation in line with its mission and scale.

What do you bring?

  • Affinity with international development and/or deafness
  • Independent working style, initiative, responsibility, and integrity
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • For the secretary: affinity with writing
  • For the treasurer: experience with financial administration is a plus, not required

There is room to shape the role further and bring in your own ideas and initiatives, in line with your experience and interests.

Time commitment

The board role is easy to combine with work or other commitments:

  • Approximately 4 hours per week for board tasks
  • 1–2 online board meetings per month
  • Two in-person half-yearly meetings per year
  • Monthly meeting with local partners in Uganda

What do we offer?

  • A meaningful volunteer role with direct social impact
  • The opportunity to gain or deepen board experience
  • Collaboration with a committed and motivated board and team
  • Space for initiative, development, and personal input
  • Work in international cooperation with local partners in Uganda

Interested?

We would be happy to meet you informally to discuss which role might suit you best.

Feel free to get in touch!
