As a schoolmate you fulfill a bridging function between non-Dutch speaking families and the school. You help the parents to better communicate and collaborate with the school.
What are you going to do?
You will be linked to a newcomer family (in many cases with a refugee background).
You visit the family weekly for a year (approximately 2 hours a week). You help the parents understand letters and emails from school. You go along to the parent meetings at school, discuss in advance with the parents what they want to talk about with the teacher and help them to have the conversation.
Together with the parents you look at what the child needs. You answer questions from the parents about the school system in the Netherlands and you help the child with homework if necessary.
You try to build a relationship of trust with the family.
We are looking for school mates who:
- approach the family with respect and equality;
- Make contact easily and be flexible;
- Have the ability to reflect and have an open attitude, also for feedback;
- Stand firmly in their shoes. (Experience with parent involvement and with people from other cultures is nice, but not required)
What do you get?
- Two training evenings prior to the project;
- Three intervision meetings and two refresher courses during the project year (planning in consultation);
- Guidance by the coordinator and contact with the other schoolmates;
- The chance to get to know a family from another culture.
