Detailed description
You see it more and more often in the news: insects are not doing well in the Netherlands. And how nice it is that you put a bee-friendly plant on your balcony, sometimes you just want to do more. The Butterfly Foundation gives a group of Green Trainees the opportunity to make a real impact.
More than two thousand different butterfly species live in the Netherlands. Quite a few of them are going downright bad. If we don't do anything, they'll be extinct in your lifetime. Fortunately, at De Vlinderstichting we know a lot about butterflies and dragonflies. For example, we know how their numbers have changed in recent decades and what we can do to protect them - crucial information for the conservation of vulnerable species. But we present that on complicated technical cards that not everyone understands - or are equally attractive to everyone. We challenge you to bring out the best in our knowledge and our people: on the screen!
With videos, interviews and the visualization of scientific data (eg catchy dynamic cards) you will start making contemporary visual material. Which butterfly species is it? What do we know about that? And how can we protect them? You are going to tell that story. Of course you will go outside, into nature, to film the special insects yourself. You will be assisted by experts in all steps of the process. Experience is therefore not necessary.
These videos will be shared via the website and the social channels of De Vlinderstichting, where they reach hundreds of thousands of people. Are you up to the challenge?
Your effort:
- You will learn from experts about butterflies diversity, behavior, habitat and protection. You consider which species you would like to portray and how.
- You will receive training in (nature) filming, editing and vlogging.
- You go to the locations where these butterflies live and make a vlog.
- You combine this vlog with the scientific knowledge of the Butterfly Foundation.
- And you can make a nice informative video about a protected species.
Your impact:
The Butterfly Foundation has many followers on social media. But because we work almost exclusively with photos, the younger target group is hardly reached. Thanks to your videos, the Butterfly Foundation comes into contact with an important target group: the young people! You improve knowledge transfer and show that science is more than dry numbers and graphs.
Corona update:
If the corona measures are still in force at the start of the traineeship, the Green Traineeship at the Butterfly Foundation can continue in an adapted form. We will provide the workshops digitally and meetings can also be organized online. Filming of fieldwork will usually take place outdoors where a large distance is possible.
