Summary

Do you also want to make a difference for newcomers who are eager to participate in the Netherlands?

Then De Nieuwe Nederlanders might be just what you're looking for!

Detailed description

Here you'll help newcomers find their way in the Netherlands—for example, by practicing the language together and/or providing support with practical questions. We also organize joint activities, such as a multicultural tasting.

We are a warm, engaged community where your efforts truly make a difference. For others, but also for yourself.

Our mission

Newcomers won't find a counter here, but a place where they can be themselves. Where growth, connection, and self-reliance are central—in their own way, at their own pace.

For us, volunteers are not mere implementers, but co-carriers of this mission. That's why we work together based on a shared sense of responsibility and trust.

What do we expect from you as a volunteer?

Equality in contact

You treat participants as full-fledged individuals, regardless of language proficiency, background, or situation. No patronizing or transmitting, but truly listening, connecting, and learning.

Respect for diversity

You're open to other perspectives, cultural differences, and customs—even if they surprise or irritate you. You don't judge, but explore and connect.

Sincerity and authenticity

You don't need to be an expert, just come with your heart. Clarity, calm, and kindness are more important than perfection.

Self-reflection and learning attitude

You're willing to learn—about others and about yourself. And if something isn't going well, you're open to feedback.

Space for the other

As a volunteer, you're there for others first and foremost. Leave your own worries and problems at home as much as possible—don't share them with participants or fellow volunteers. Participants often have enough on their minds. They come—just like the volunteers—to relax, connect, and learn.

We believe it's important that volunteering is enjoyable and worthwhile. But for us, the participants are always our priority.

Boundaries in contact

We encourage encounters and genuine connection. Romantic relationships can sometimes develop, but within this project, they are not welcome, especially if they are visible or noticeable. This is inconsistent with the safe and learning-focused environment we aim to provide. We expect everyone to respect this boundary—out of concern for the participants and the community as a whole.

What can you expect from us?

A clear introduction

A warm, involved atmosphere

Support if you have questions or concerns

Clarity when things are rough — with room for discussion

Who decides what?

We work together as equals, but the ultimate responsibility always lies with the initiator (that's me, Nicole Drenth). This means I make decisions about the direction, working methods, and composition of the team. Wherever possible, I do this in consultation with regular volunteers and participants, and always with respect for everyone.

Because I, as the initiator, have an overview and pick up on signals that aren't always visible to others, I sometimes make decisions to protect the project and the safety of participants, even if this means intervening early. This is never done to punish, but out of concern for the well-being of the entire community.

If a volunteer's behavior or attitude does not align with our vision or threatens safety—which has unfortunately happened before—I may decide to terminate the collaboration without prior consultation. This is never done lightly, but always to protect the project and the participants.

Finally

We're not a hierarchical organization, but a slowly growing community. Volunteering with us is free and comes straight from the heart. After a trial period of a few meetings, we'll see if we click and if you're a good fit. After that, you're very welcome. There's no need to sign up or sign out, because most volunteers return—precisely because it feels relaxed, natural, and fun. No hassle, just being together.

Here, participants find a home, even though they're far from their own country. That's what makes The New Dutch unique. And you? Do you want to be a part of it too?

Dutch classes take place on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (sometimes extending to 5:00 PM). Other activities also take place on Wednesdays, at various times, in consultation with participants and volunteers.

Confirmation

By participating as a volunteer at De Nieuwe Nederlanders, you indicate that you recognize yourself in these principles and are prepared to act accordingly.

Greeting,

Nicole, Hans and Joukje

and The New Dutch

About De Nieuwe Nederlanders

We teach residents of various AZCs more about Dutch culture and the Dutch language. These are people who do not yet have a status and often do not yet have a BSN number. But who are extremely motivated and eager to learn. They want to integrate and participate as quickly as possible. It is very inspiring to be able to help these people.
