What we do

BuurtBuik West fights food waste while bringing vulnerable members in Amsterdam together to share a free meal. Every Saturday we collect surplus food at various supermarkets and vegetable shops and we serve free vegetarian lunches at Buurtcentrum Horizon.

With a team of enthusiastic and motivated volunteers we transform surplus food in delicious and healthy meals for our guests. You certainly do not have to be a master chef to become a volunteer, but some affinity with food and cooking is certainly a plus. 

What a day at BuurtBuik West looks like:

At 11:00 am we sort the food and decide on the menu of the day. We prepare the meal and our guests arrive at 13:00 pm. After the food is served, all the volunteers also. After lunch we clean up the kitchen. Leftover food will be handed out to our guests and fruit and our vegetable scraps will be distributed to the pigs at Boerderij Westerpark. So almost nothing is wasted!

At BuurtBuik West you can volunteer on a regular or flexible basis. So if you have a few hours to spend, you are welcome to join us on a Saturday from 11:00 am untill 15.00 pm at Buurtcentrum Horizon in the Spaarndammerbuurt (Hembrugstraat 156).
