Do you help children make the switch?

The big step from primary school to secondary education is again taken by many students from group 8. The transition from primary school to secondary education, the “big school”, is a big step for many children. The Coach4You volunteer project, set up in collaboration with Gilde Deventer, guides children in this. For example, if the child needs extra help with his study approach, is less socially skilled or if parents have problems with parenting or are unable to provide sufficient support. The transition to secondary education comes for children of a vulnerable age. Due to the large differences between primary and secondary education, they sometimes get lost, skip school or end up on the street. Coach4You is intended to prevent this school dropout. Coach4You maintains contact with Sine Limite, an organization that provides appropriate education in Deventer for students who need it. In addition, there are also contacts with the care teams of secondary education, such as the expertise center. Coach4You Deventer is part of the national Coach4You project. The project started in Deventer in 2014 and the first students were successfully supervised in the past school year. Eligible students receive a personal coach when they reach the end of grade eight of primary school. The coach visits the pupil's home every week and discusses with him or her everything that is important to be able to participate well at school and to feel comfortable there. The coach is a volunteer who helps the student learn to study, plan schoolwork, develop (social) skills, make choices and the coach offers social emotional support to the student. The coach stands next to the student and gives the student insight into his / her own actions in situations that the student encounters. The student keeps his coach until the beginning of the second year of secondary education. The coach also involves the parents in the supervision, if the coach deems this necessary. Parents will have to continue the work of the coach after seventh grade, with the ultimate result that the student learns to find his own way. A new group of students is currently being started for the coming school year. We need enthusiastic coaches for this group. Everyone with a higher vocational education level of work and thinking is welcome to join this group of volunteers. Affinity with the target group of 11 to 13 year olds is a precondition.
