The corona crisis caught many of us off guard and created challenges never experienced before. Our daily lives have been impacted greatly and I am sure yours has too. Amongst all groups, especially one was hit very hard - local market stall owners like the ones at your favorite marketplace and many other locations. Walking across empty markets we realized that these vendors are usually dependent on regulars as well as tourists that are doing their weekly grocery shopping and looking for a unique market experience. Unfortunately, due to this uncommon situation and strict regulations, most of the time markets right now are fairly empty - This is why we want to help!
To help we have created Roodkappje (https://roodkappje.nl). Roodkappje is an easy to use online platform that local market vendors can use to offer their products online to old and new customers alike. Having this tool, those lovely and hard-working vendors will now be more likely to survive this crisis and will be prepared for a possible second wave and other challenging circumstances in the future. What’s great about this is that everyone can now support those local markets easily from home by ordering and enjoying local and fresh groceries.
Already a couple of weeks ago we started the project with the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam de Pijp and have established close relationships with many vendors. Every one of them has a unique story and is grateful for this chance.
This is where you come into play. Every Tuesday and Thursday you can find us at the market collecting orders and preparing bags that we then deliver. We can not do all this by ourselves. Thankfully we can rely on wonderful volunteers that are supporting us relentlessly with bundling and delivering groceries. But we definetly need more help while we are steadily growing.
What do we need help with exactly?
Every Tuesday and Thursday we meet at 4PM on the Albert Cuyp market. We then together pick up the orders from the different vendors. After this we prepare the bags for delivery and double check if all the items are correct. Finally, we deliver the orders to people around Amsterdam either by bike or foot. It is lots of fun!
You will be able to meet a lot of lovely, supportive people from Amsterdam. We have a international volunteer base with a diverse background.

Many local market vendors are struggling due to the crisis. At the same time, many people can’t or do not want to leave the house but still need groceries or simply want to support their favorite local market. We came up with a solution to help these vendors get their items online quickly and offer contactless delivery to their consumers. Lovely volunteers help with preparing, packing, and delivering the orders.
