Summary
At the reception, visitors buy a ticket, receive brief information about the museum and children are given a treasure hunt.Detailed description
The Sea and Port Museum consists of 3 floors with a total of 13 rooms, museum café and reception. During the opening afternoons there are always 3 attendants present (1 on each floor), someone at the reception and someone in the museum café.
A guard supervises the rooms on the floor in question and provides the visitor with information about what is exhibited in the rooms if they have any questions. The subjects in the rooms are:
- history of digging North Sea Canal
- origin and development of IJmuiden
- fishing
- industry in IJmuiden and along the North Sea Canal
- Pilotage, Vletterlieden and KNRM
- Tugs and salvage
- Scheveningen Radio and radio operator
- Engine hall with old (ship) engines and miniature models
A reception employee
- receives visitors and sells tickets
- gives a brief explanation about the museum
- explains to children how the treasure hunts work
- explains how the audio tours work with a smartphone
- sells books and souvenirs
- can operate a modern cash register or is able to learn to do so
A museum café employee:
- creates a pleasant atmosphere in the museum café
- sells coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine, beer, toasted sandwiches and cookies
- puts away used glassware/cups and washes with dishwasher
- cleans tables, bar, etc.
- can operate a modern cash register or is able to learn to do so
For all positions we are looking for people who enjoy helping others, look well-groomed, have a cheerful character, enjoy working in a team and are willing to go the extra mile.
The museum is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5 pm. In July and August the museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday afternoons.
We ask that you schedule at least 2 afternoons per month. You can decide for yourself each month which afternoons you are in the museum. Even if you only want/can work in the summer season, you are very welcome.
It is useful for a guard to have some affinity with the maritime world and/or IJmuiden and the North Sea Canal or to be able to learn this knowledge.
