About Hotel Maria Kapel

Hotel Maria Kapel (HMK) is an artist-in-residence, exhibition space and cinema for contemporary visual art in the city center of Hoorn; a historic city 40 kilometers north of Amsterdam. HMK is a foundation whose aim is to support emerging and more established artists from home and abroad in the production of new work and to promote exchanges between national and international artists, cultural institutions and the public. HMK's studio / exhibition space is an early sixteenth-century chapel, surrounded by a semi-private courtyard. This beautiful, quiet and spacious working environment offers the artists-in-residence a unique space for reflection, experiment and production. HMK places the artist at the center of its activities and encourages risk-taking, which it sees as an important part of artistic development. The public program of exhibitions, screenings, lectures, workshops and publications aims to challenge the perception of what contemporary art is and bring the public closer to the practice on which it is based.
