About us

ANBI foundation By the Ocean we Unite was founded in 2016 by professional sailor Thomas van Thiel. While fulfilling his big dream in 2014 - sailing across the Atlantic Ocean - after 10 days of sailing, he came across "a plastic bottle in the middle of that blue desert", as he can tell so beautifully. This hit hard, so far from the continents. Thomas decided to dedicate his time and energy to protecting his beloved oceans. Now, 4 years later and with a lot of knowledge, impact and a wonderful team, we are ready for the next step.

We sail on rivers, lakes, seas and oceans to combat the growing plastic soup. Our team of enthusiastic scientists invites the general public, organizations, governments and influencers to map the quantities of (micro) plastic together. What better place to get intensely involved in the challenge and solutions than on the beautiful waters of this planet. Where does all that plastic come from? Where is it going? What are the consequences? What can you do? What can we do? The foundation sails, tells, inspires, motivates, connects and steers. And everyone can join. Together on the path to cleaner oceans.

By the Ocean we Unite is growing rapidly. Just like the attention to plastic soup. This growth includes an experienced content manager who takes a lot of work off our hands.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced content manager who shares the ideas and energy of By the Ocean we Unite and who wants to grow with the foundation. You get excited about the mighty seas and oceans of this planet and have an affinity for plastic (pollution). We expect you to spend about 1 day a week on:

Manage social media activities

· Conducting email campaigns

Writing and editing texts

· Manage the news archive (in the form of blogs)

Advise on website optimization in all areas

· Designing and monitoring the corporate identity

· Consultation with internal and external stakeholders about the content of the website

· Make the website as user-friendly and attractive as possible with the available resources

Our wishes are also that you:

- have good communication skills, both orally and in writing;

- speak fluent English;

- can work excellently independently;

- can work well with deadlines;

- are proactive;

- have proven experience and expertise in content creation and management.

It concerns a function of a maximum of 1 day per week with a view of the lake. We have a 3-month trial period.

What do we offer?

For the time being, it is an unpaid position with an expense allowance. In the long term, the foundation hopes to offer a fixed fee. You will work in a very driven and professional team where fun and adventure run parallel to generating as much positive impact as possible. You will be involved in special events both on water and on land and will be fed with the latest insights into the plastic problems and opportunities. You also get access to a very extensive and warm network in the world of plastic pollution.

The drive within By the Ocean we Unite has brought us to where we are. If we had worked for the money, we wouldn't have gotten this far. We are always very enthusiastic about our passionate and inspiring team, and hopefully also about you. The foundation is going through an exciting phase of professionalization. We have had a waterfront office in Amsterdam South since November, but we often work from home. We therefore expect you to be able to work independently. You will work closely with Karl Beerenfenger (MT) and a number of relevant volunteers .
