Volunteer alongside the Orthopedic Interest Group to support a local SXM youth swim meet by assisting with race timing while engaging with young athletes.

Join the Orthopedic Interest Group for a hands-on community engagement experience supporting young athletes at a local St. Maarten swim meet. Medical student volunteers will assist with timing races and other meet activities while interacting with swimmers, families, coaches, and community volunteers.
You can attend the morning shift from 7:30 - 1:00 or afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00.
Beyond helping the meet run successfully, this experience offers students an opportunity to see the important role community sports programs play in promoting physical activity, healthy development, confidence, and social connection among young people. Students will also gain insight into the practical challenges local sports organizations may face, including limited personnel, facilities, equipment, funding, and other resources.
For future physicians—particularly those interested in orthopedics, sports medicine, pediatrics, or community health—the experience provides a valuable perspective on health outside the clinical setting. By working alongside the people who make youth athletics possible, students can better understand the community environments that support lifelong physical activity and the barriers that may affect young people's access to healthy recreational opportunities.
