Volunteer with Healthy Hearts, Healthy Paws, a community initiative providing free health screenings, veterinary services, and education to support health.
We are inviting community members to join us as volunteers for Healthy Hearts, Healthy Paws, a free community health and veterinary outreach event bringing together medical and veterinary professionals, students, animal welfare organizations, and community partners to promote healthier families and healthier pets.
About the Initiative
Healthy Hearts, Healthy Paws is a collaborative initiative led by the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), in partnership with local veterinarians, the Animal Welfare Association, the Cat Shelter, and other community organizations.
The event brings together medical students and faculty from AUC, along with 22 veterinary students and five veterinarians from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, to provide free health services and education to the St. Maarten community.
Guided by the One Health approach, the initiative recognizes that the health of people, animals, and our shared environment are interconnected.
Throughout the day, participants will have access to:
- Free veterinary services: Pet health examinations, vaccinations, and tick prevention.
- Free human health screenings: Blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and other basic health assessments.
- Health education: Practical information about preventing illness, caring for pets, and keeping families healthy.
- Community research: A brief survey exploring pet ownership, health behaviors, and the connections between human and animal health.
Beyond providing much-needed services, the event creates opportunities for medical and veterinary students to learn from one another, strengthen community partnerships, and better understand the health needs of St. Maarten.
How You Can Help
We need enthusiastic community volunteers to help make the day a success! Volunteers will support several areas of the event, including:
Research and Community Surveys (5–7 volunteers)
Help invite and guide pet owners through a brief, approximately 15-minute research survey. Our goal is to reach at least 100 participants. Volunteers will work alongside our student research team and receive instructions before beginning.
Registration and Check-In (6 volunteers)
Welcome attendees, assist with registration, provide directions, and help families and their pets begin their visit.
Pet Owner Escorts and Event Runners (8 volunteers)
Help participants and their pets move smoothly between waiting areas, veterinary examination stations, and the exit. Assist the event team with coordination and communication.
Health Education Tent (4–8 volunteers)
Support medical and veterinary students and faculty as they share educational materials and practical health messages about people, pets, and families.
Waiting Area Support (1–2 volunteers per tent)
Help maintain an organized, welcoming environment for pet owners and their animals. Answer general questions, offer water, support crowd management, and help ensure that participants and their pets are comfortable while waiting.
Why Volunteer?
Your time and support will help us reach more families, provide essential health services, advance community-based research, and demonstrate what is possible when our community comes together.
You do not need to be a healthcare professional to volunteer! We welcome community members who enjoy helping people, care about animals, and want to make a positive difference in St. Maarten.
Please complete the registration form below to indicate your availability and preferred volunteer role.
Together, we can build a healthier community—one person, one pet, and one family at a time! 🐾❤️
